Law Student Cover Letter – Two Mistakes You’ll Want to Avoid
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010If you think that a law student cover letter is completely different to any other student cover letter you can write, you’re only half right. Yes, it’s a field of work that is going to require you to pay more attention to the language you use but the basics of the cover letter, it’s formatting and best practices will still apply. Below I’ll cover the best practices that have helped me.
The first mistake you’ll want to avoid is not making your resume bulleted. A law student cover letter like any other cover letter has to be created with the reader in mind. Ask yourself “What will make my cover letter easy to read?” Bullets are a great format to use with a cover letter. They give you the tool to point out the most important facts you want to get across to the reader about yourself or your experience.
Use bullets to distinguish it from other cover letters that may look like just a block of text that goes on and on. The bullets make it visually easy to read and give the reader the best information when they skim through it.
Another mistake that is common with students is a lack of focus to the cover letter. The law student cover letter’s I’ve worked on all have been custom to the employer. You should always make an effort to write a custom cover letter for the position you’re applying for. It’s been studied and confirmed that almost three quarters of hiring managers like a resume and cover that is focused on the position their hiring for. If you have a description of what will be expected from the position, focus your letter on your ability to accomplish those tasks and paint a clear picture.
The last thing you want to send with your resume is a boring letter simply asking for an interview. Think about it, a letter just asking for an interview or a letter following the steps described above. Which would you read and call for an interview?

To create the best law student cover letter you can create it by making a check list of the main key point you want the reader to get of you.
If you’re a great writer, you can probably write it yourself. Some chose to use a service to have it professionally written. I opted to use a cover letter generator help me with my law student cover letter. There are a few good options out and the best I used was Amazing cover letters and One click cover letters. Why did I get both, I still don’t know.
I thought I might find something dramatically different in one over the other. I didn’t, and I wouldn’t recommend getting more than one program. I liked them both and if I had to choose I would recommend Amazing cover letters.
Remember that for a law student cover letter the language will be important. With Amazing cover letters you can make it industry specific and having the correct language for the letter will be much easier this way. It was for me. Customizing it was very easy. I simply put in a few sentences, my bullets like I mentioned above and I read it out loud to see how it sounded.
Accounting Cover Letters – I Admit it I Copied an Online Cover Letter
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010Accounting cover letters are a great selling tool and one that can open doors in a great way. Having a clear easy to read cover letter is much easier to do than you might expect. I admit it when I started my job search I had a small episode of writers block and I used a generic online resume cover letter. I learned my lesson.
It was good to have something to accompany my resume. I had been using accounting cover letters that I found online and copied which was very easy but it really wasn’t doing much to connect me to the readers. I used those letters for three months straight. They did produce some call backs and a couple of interviews, no job thought. Honestly I blamed my bad results on the soft job market.
I was flipping through a jobs magazine when I ran across an article about what hiring managers like to see on a cover letter. I was really surprised to see how they preferred a letter that was related to the job they were hiring for. It did surprise me but it made sense. Why would they hire me, it I don’t say anything on my resume or cover letter about my ability to do the specific tasks they’ll need me to do?
I read over the accounting cover letters with a new set of eyes and realized that a simple introduction of my resume was good but it wasn’t going to open many doors for me. Truth be told, I had been lazy about rewriting my letters and it was starting to hurt me more than help me.
I’m not the greatest writer, so putting together a letter that would appeal to a hiring manager wasn’t easy for me. Much less having to write one for each job I wanted to apply for. I found it useful to use a guide and cover letter generator for those time that I got stuck and couldn’t figure what to write, there were many.
The real lesson I learned from all this is that no matter if its accounting cover letters or any other field. Best practice would be to find out what the employer will be needing you to do and focus your letter on that. It’s easier for them to think you’re the ideal choice if you fit into the part they need you for, instead of having to discover it on their own.

If I could go back I would have made the changes sooner. Like they say, hind site is always 20/20.
The most challenging part for me was writing the accounting cover letters for each job. Like I mentioned I’m not the greatest writer and making time to create a whole new letter wasn’t easy. That’s the reason I used amazing cover letters to create most of the accounting cover letters I sent.
Generating a custom letter with amazing cover letters was much easier. I simply picked out the best phrases for the letter, put in a few sentences and added my bullet points and I was done. I like to use bullets to give them what they want to see in an easy to see format. The program explains all about it. Their eyes naturally gravitate towards the bullets and most times that’s what they’ll read first.
It worked. I managed several interviews within the first month and a job offer followed. If anyone is having trouble with custom accounting cover letters and finding the time to do them. They should give the cover letter generator a try. You can read more about it here.
Student Cover Letter – Make it Professional Regardless of Experience
Friday, June 25th, 2010I started my job search early, I was well aware that I had to write a student cover letter I just didn’t want it to look like I didn’t know what I was doing. Well before I actually graduated I was already sending out my resume and my student cover letter. I wasn’t getting job offers but I was doing it to plant seeds with companies I wanted to work with in the future. I did get a few interviews which gave me some feed back on my cover letter.
My student cover letter focused on my education and current curriculum. Here’s the trick to providing curriculum on the cover letter. Don’t give them all your extracurricular classes and activities you’re involved in. The worst thing to do when working on your cover letter as a student is to discuss all of your involvement with fraternities and stuff like that. Trust me, that’s not what they want to hear.
Stick to the curriculum that applies to the job for example accounting for accounting positions and any practical experience, paid or not paid that you’ve had, related to the position.
Another important point to keep in mind for your student cover letter is to be one hundred percent thorough on your proof reading of the letter. Nothing says student louder than a cover letter that looks like you put it together between beer and pizza runs. Make sure there are not spelling errors and grammar mistakes.
The student cover letter you submit is going to be the first impression the employer has of you. One tip that helped me a lot was to read it, out loud and see what it sounds like. I know it sounds strange but I found that actually hearing it was different to reading it. Listening to the way my choice of words sounded made it easier for me to catch mistakes.

I wanted to have my student cover letter professionally written and formatted. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to afford the high price that comes along with having someone else put a few hours of work into it.
I decided to get a copy of Amazing cover Letters because it was a lot cheaper for me to get that, than to spend a couple hundred dollars on the service. I did eventually use a service when I had the money to pay for the service but for my student cover letter, I used a combination of programs. I looked for reviews of cover letter generators and picked the one that seemed to provide what I needed and it delivered in a big way.
I usually have trouble putting into writing what I want to say. With Amazing cover letters it was much easier for me to put together the letter. I did customize it to each individual company I was applying but that was just a few sentences I had to put in. The rest was professional and appropriate for the job. Even though it was a student cover letter it still presented me as a professional.
What I was looking for was good custom template programs that would easily allow me to add text without having to rewrite the whole letter. Amazing cover letter provided me that and I’ve used it for more than just my student cover letter. I’ve used it to help family members with their more professional resume cover letters. What I like the best is not having to rewrite the letter to make it fit me. That kind of defeats the purpose, to have to re write the student cover letter.

High School Student Cover Letter Guide
Friday, June 25th, 2010A high school student cover letter would come in very hand to all the high school students and recent graduates that are usually aggressively looking for a job. Approaching as many places as possible and filling out applications is good practice and it’s definitely in the numbers to get a job. Having a little on your side can help open up your opportunities.
One way I found to increase my opportunities was to always have with me a resume and cover letter to turn in with my application. Better yet, if I had the time and opportunity to take the application back at a later time. I would put together a cover letter specifically for that job position.
The easiest way to stand out with a high school student cover letter is to focus your letter and attention to what you can bring to the position. You won’t be able to rely on your experience but being young and hungry can be just as appealing.
Focus your letter on the following order of importance.
- Why you want a job.
- Energy you have and would bring to the position.
- Ability to work well with people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to learn quickly and implement what you learn with little supervision after learning.
- Not afraid to ask question and learn from your piers.
- Availability to work the hours the position requires.
When I applied those points to the high school student cover letter I was using, I found that my lack of experience wasn’t as much of an issue and I was offered the opportunity to sit in and start learning the position I would be taking.
In my case I was taking over the position of someone moving up in the company, so it was easy to learn and still have someone to go to afterward.

For me writing a custom cover letter didn’t really come to easy. Initially I had a lot of trouble putting into words something that would sound professional and specific to the industry. I found it very useful to get a program that helped my put together the letters.
Not only was I able to write them faster but I was able customize them to the company with just a few sentences. Making the writing experience for me much faster and easier, using Amazing Cover Letters I was able to put together about 10 student cover letters and it really didn’t look like a high school student had written them.
High school student cover letters don’t have to be basic with nothing to offer. Students have a lot to offer you just simply have to learn how to put one together.
Instead of experience, I sold my maturity and hunger to work. Amazing cover letters helped my do that in a way that I couldn’t have on my own. I’m really glad I started to use it. My results improved and it really made and impact with the reader. It didn’t seem like a high school student cover letter.
I would recommend looking at some reviews and getting one fast to start seeing results.

Online Resume Cover Letter – My Frustration Using Generic Cover Letters
Monday, May 24th, 2010Getting no results with my job search I had to try something new. I’m glad I started thinking outside of the box. Thanks to a little help from a good friend.
Searching for a job isn’t easy and using a generic online resume cover letter didn’t make it any easier for me. I lost months of productivity and energy with a letter that was doing nothing to sell me. I had been using the same letter for 6 months until a good friend of mine shed some light my way.
I was getting the same generic answer every time I followed up on a submitted resume and cover letter. “So sorry, the position has been filled.” It sounded as bad and generic as the online resume cover letter I was sending them. When you think about it, what else could I have expected? Unfortunately it took me to long to realize this.
Out of frustration, after 6 months of job hunting I took a friends advice to revamp my online resume cover letter. She moved out to Washington in 2008. We don’t get a lot of time to talk but I did share with her my difficulties securing a job. She mentioned to me that she used a resume and cover letter manual to put hers together and how it improve her presentation which got her more interview opportunities. Having had about six call backs and just four interviews in 4 months I really told myself I needed to make a change.
She shared with me that for the place where she currently works she went above what most of us do when applying for a job. She didn’t exactly follow instructions on how to submit. The instruction was to email it. She did email but followed it up by taking it in herself. She also chatted up the person at the front desk before going and asking about the job position and who the new hire would be working with, before she submitted it. That gave her some incite on how to customize the letter.
I took some of her advice and I retired my online resume cover letter for a new and improved one. I walked it in to the potential employers I was applying for and though I don’t have her personality to just pick up and talk to a stranger at the front desk as if I’ve known them for years. I did learn about the company through their website and incorporated my knowledge of the field of business their in, into my already improved cover letter. That along with how I wanted to be part of a great company with a good solid base and I saw myself there for years helped my secure more interviews and eventually the job I have now.

Write Resume Cover Letter – Tips to Stand out and Land the Job
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010When you write resume cover letters, you’ll have to play a little detective work. If you want to stand out with who ever is going to be interviewing you. You’ll have to show you know more about the company than your competing prospects for the job. Interviewers love this. I’ll cover a bit more on what I did later. First let me make sure you understand why you need a good cover letter.
Your resume, as great as it may be is more of a run down of your past and possibly, current job positions. I know it was for me. Of course it’ll cover your strengths but most times it doesn’t prove any of your skills. The cover letter helps you stand out in a way a resume doesn’t by showing the interest you have for working for a specific company. Going the extra mile goes along way and it shows your interviewer you’re not afraid of working. Think about it. Your reason for wanting the job goes from, changing employment, for what ever reason, more money, closer to home etc. To being part of an organization, that you like or identify with.
How you prove your interest, this is where the detective comes in. You find out as much as possible about the company as you can. Without braking any laws, keep it clean will you. You then write a resume cover letter plugging as much of the knowledge you picked up as you can. Paint a picture in the readers mind of how you can benefit the organization by being part of it and how much you know it already.
There’s also phrases and words you want to avoid. Nobody speaks that way. Lets be honest. There’s some lines on some of the generic cover letters that yell out generic, all over them. Don’t get filed away. Take some time, learn a little about where you want to work and please make sure it makes sense to where you’re applying. That’s the biggest problem with letters that are too generic. Many times they don’t make sense.
Also, remember the power of search engines? Employers can find those generic cover letters online in about 0.21 seconds. That’s right. The letters you find, they find.
In my experience, a good cover letter has made a difference between landing the interview and not. That’s the first step, right? I catch the reader with the knowledge I have of their organization and a few other key tips I learned to incorporate into my letter. I’ve helped my sister and brothers with their letter and they’ve also landed the jobs. What I picked up made the difference on how I write my

Resume Cover Letter Software – What I Liked and Didn’t Like
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010Resume cover letter software promises to make your letter undeniable in the eyes of the reader. It almost guarantees that you will land the job. Of course it’s not in their best interest to do this yet the sales pitch is pretty heavy on the side of absolute confidence you’ll make the interview. I recently used such a program and though I didn’t land and interview at every opportunity. I did find some aspects of the software useful and other aspects over exaggerated.
First, what I found that works from the software is the research into the correct wording you want to use. For example, the format and language is different from medical to executive and educational. For me, in the educational field, it came in very handy that the custom phrases and statements, that I just had to tweak by the way to make my own, were already in a language that the reader could relate too. The reader relating to it was what I found to be important. Just about every branch has its own dialect. The closer I could get my letter to that the better my chances were to getting in the door.
What I felt under delivered, from what I expected, was the amount of editing I had to do. I expected to just plug some information and voila, a perfect custom letter would pop out of the software. Not so. I had to tweak and adjust to make it my own. Which is not really that bad considering that, it’s better than a generic letter found online or a letter that a resume cover letter software spits out, making no sense and not effectively engaging the reader.
When you think about it, it’s not that bad to have to tweak a cover letter. It would have taken me much more time to research and find out how to better word my resume cover letter. This way eighty five percent of the work is done and I just finish the customization of the letter along with personal information and personal experiences to make it stand out and make it more genuine and custom to myself.
Would I recommend the use if a resume cover letter software? That really is up to the individual to decide. I wanted every edge I could have to ensure I had my foot in the door. I’m the type of person that doesn’t like to leave things to chance. For that reason it was a good decision, for me.
In my experience, a good cover letter has made a difference between landing the interview and not. That’s the first step, right? How to Write a Cover Letter for a Job Application – Simple Steps to Get the Interview
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010I looked into how to write a cover letter for a job application to try and stand out from other applicant to the same job. Yet I didn’t really know how to go about it. Most times a letter is included with a resume. Many jobs that I was applying for at that time didn’t ask for a resume. They simply asked me to fill out an application. Something I started doing in these situations was to include a cover letter, a simple one, with my application.
Looking online I found many good resources but I didn’t want to turn in a cover letter that looked generic or over used. My plan of action at that time was to get a job as soon as I could. I had a car payment and I didn’t want to damage my credit or the credit of my cosigner on the note. Aka my dad, I would never hear the end of it if I did.
I included a letter with every application I submitted and though many of the jobs I applied for weren’t high lever positions. Most managers and human resources personnel acknowledged and appreciated the letter. I wasn’t looking to impress anyone. I just really needed a job.
This is what I started to put on my letter. I took initiative with my letter and thought it wasn’t as elaborate as the resume cover letters that I read over with the software I purchased. I did include paint a picture to the reader where I was diligent with my work and my desire to grow in the company and move up in the company. I included any and all information on my letter that I felt would help me. For example, I had participated in a work study program recently and I made sure to put how well I was able to blend with my peers.
I also made sure to point out my fluency in Spanish and the fact that I was well versed in computers. Most jobs now require some computer work and I wanted to make sure I was proficient in most programs.
I did land a job soon after I started to include a cover letter with my job application. I did notice a difference in the number of call back I receive and I was even offered better positions than what I had initially applied for. I would say that anyone looking for a job, resume required or not, should always have a cover letter accompany their application.
In my experience, a good cover letter has made a difference between landing the interview and not. That’s the first step, right? I catch the reader with the knowledge I have of their organization and a few other key tips I learned to incorporate into my letter. Cover Resume Letter – How to Write an Amazing Resume Cover Letter, From Medical to Administrative
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010Why a cover resume letter? Why not just my resume after all I worked on it for weeks to make it perfect, right. Right, except that your resume, as great as it is, needs something to complement all the experience, knowledge, dedication, tenacity you would bring to the organization. Here’s a couple of pointers I picked up to turn my cover letter into an interview, rather than a file cabinet candidate.
The first step to making more money is getting the interview. No matter how great your resume, without a good introduction the interview isn’t always in the bag. Let’s look at this from the employers stand point. Your resume says you have excellent organization skills, you have background in research and development or you want a position that would require these skills. Yet, your letter doesn’t show case any of these attributes.
Your letter simply introduces you, at best. If and when you make the interview, let’s assume, you don’t have a clue as to what the company does, its a red flag. A good interviewer will ask you what you know about the company. They won’t expect you to have the details but a general idea would be expected. After all they don’t just want someone there simply because they’re looking to make more money. What’s the value to the company? That’s the question in their mind.
My cover resume letter is always custom to my employer. I picked up that pointer one time that I made a mistake and sent a generic cover resume letter to an HR department and it made no sense. Instead of getting a call for an interview I got a call telling me they didn’t have any opening in that department.
That was embarrassing, needles to say I thanked the person for the call and didn’t try to clear up the confusion. How would I look trying to secure a job not even knowing what they were hiring for. Learning experience I tell you.
The key here is learning about the company or companies you are submitting resumes too. Know the industry they’re in and if its earned any distinguishing awards or part of any charity or organization. When possible address the letter, by name, to the person who will be reading it to interview candidates. As I mentioned above stay away from cover resume letters that are to generic. When I put this into use my options opened up significantly. The jobs market it tight. Present yourself as an asset.
The last thing before this gets to long is exactly that. Don’t make your letter to long. In no way, longer than one page. Leave them spiked enough to call you.
In my experience, a good cover letter has made a difference between landing the interview and not. That’s the first step, right? I catch the reader with the knowledge I have of their organization and a few other key tips I learned to incorporate into my letter. Generic Resume cover Letter – Why You Need to Avoid Them When Applying in Technical, Medical or Educational Fields
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010I spent some time online looking for a generic resume cover letter recently to present my resume. I have a number of years of experience in the teaching field and I was looking to increase my income. I made what I consider to be a huge mistake while applying to one of the companies that were hiring. If I would have thought about the information I was getting I would have figured out my problem sooner. Here’s what others should avoid when looking for a generic resume cover letter.
What I didn’t realize when I came across some of the letters online was that, if I found them with such ease, other’s would find them also. Of course, I didn’t copy the letter word for word but the format and the text used is redundant and looks and sounds generic. So I looked for something, still generic but with reference to teaching. I found a letter and I took the information and put together a quick cover letter that I sent out.
A couple of days after the generic resume cover letter and my resume were received. I received a call from the human resources department, of one of the companies I submitted too. It was a short, doctor type of question and answer conversation that didn’t last more than a minute if that. The conversation felt long and I’ll tell you I haven’t been that embarrassed before in my life. Turns out I didn’t change the letter enough to where I customized to my field of teaching. The resume I sent was way out of what the company was looking for. It didn’t clearly state my area of teaching or my technical background, which is what the position required.
As the person on the phone went over how I wasn’t qualified for the position available per what my cover letter stated. I realized the mistake I had made. There was no way for me to go back and say anything regarding my mistake. After all I had just copied a letter form an online source and made minor changes to it. It was a shame for me being that I felt that would be a good place for me to work.
From that mistake I learned to create a detailed resume and cover letter for each individual company. I looked into better ways of getting my letter to stand out. As for my generic resume cover letter days, they are far behind me. I won’t go through that again.
In my experience, a good cover letter has made a difference between landing the interview and not. That’s the first step, right? I catch the reader with the knowledge I have of their organization and a few other key tips I learned to incorporate into my letter.
